WHAT IS AN ICD CODE?

Updated: Mar 17

Introduction:

Picture a calm day at the beach. You decide to go for a nice swim in the ocean. But, oh no! Things take a surprising turn when a dolphin bites you. Later, at the doctor's office, you tell them about the odd incident, saying, "A dolphin bit me." However, when the doctor sends the bill to your insurance, it doesn't just say "Bit by dolphin." Instead, it has a code, W56.01XA, which means "Bitten by dolphin, initial encounter." This code is part of a system called the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), which is like a special language for keeping track of health problems.

Summary:

Knowing and using these ICD codes is super important in healthcare. They create a common way for healthcare workers to talk about different health issues. These codes make it easy to record and share information about diseases, making the healthcare system work better. When we use these codes, it's simpler to keep track of health data, like how many people have a certain illness or how well treatments are working. Plus, these codes help keep accurate records of a person's medical history. This way, doctors can make smart decisions based on what health problems someone had in the past. So, in a nutshell, using ICD codes not only makes paperwork in healthcare easier but also helps make sure patients get the best care possible.

Body:

Q: How does ICD codes make it simpler to track healthcare data?

In this Article by SImplePractice it highlights this. "Whether you’re billing for health care services through insurance or using a superbill, the payer will need several key pieces of information in order to understand...,". "Because larger payers receive millions of claims each year, this key information is usually provided in codes for efficiency. " Like the article states medical insurances are receiving millions and using ICD coding it can help describe the medical claim for the insurance. These ICD codes break down the claim and are able to tell a story with just some letters and numbers. For example if you put E55.9 the person examining automatically understands the person has a vitamin 5 deficiency.

Q: Benefits of using ICD Codes for tracking illnesses?

In this article by the WHO it gives a good outline for this. "Users include physicians, nurses, other providers, researchers, health information managers and coders, health information technology workers, policy-makers, insurers and patient organizations.ICD has been translated into 43 languages and it is being used by all member States. Most countries (117) use the system to report mortality data, a primary indicator of health status." This ICD system is worldwide and a way for us all the communicate. We are able to share results of illness and help track solutions by intertwining them to icd codes and peoples medical history.

Q: How did ICD coding start?

"Some scholars track the origin of ICD to 1763. The French physician and botanist Dr François Bossier de Sauvages de Lacroix developed a categorization of 10 distinct classes of diseases, which were further divided into 2400 unique diseases." Later in the article it talks about In the past, doctors and scientists needed a way to organize and classify diseases and causes of death so they could understand and communicate about them better. Similar to how botanists classify plants, a doctor named Thomas Sydenham came up with a system for classifying diseases. Later, in 1853, a group of people decided it was important to have a system that everyone around the world could use to classify causes of death. They appointed Jacob Marc d'Espine and William Farr to develop this system, which eventually became known as the "International List of Causes of Death." Jacques Bertillon and his team in Paris established the first official version of this list in 1893. It was presented in the United States, and by 1898, many countries in North America, including the United States, started using this classification system. By 1948 WHO took charge of this classification system.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Importance of ICD Codes in Healthcare: ICD codes are crucial in healthcare as they provide a standardized way for healthcare workers to communicate about different health issues. They simplify the process of recording and sharing information about diseases, making the healthcare system more efficient.

  2. Simplifying Healthcare Data Tracking: ICD codes make it simpler to track healthcare data by providing a common language for describing medical conditions. This allows for easier communication between healthcare providers, insurers, researchers, and policymakers.

  3. Benefits of ICD Codes for Patients: Using ICD codes ensures that accurate records of a person's medical history are maintained. This enables doctors to make informed decisions based on past health problems, leading to better patient care.

  4. Global Reach of ICD System: The ICD system is used worldwide and has been translated into multiple languages. It is utilized by all member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) and plays a critical role in reporting mortality data and assessing health status globally.

  5. Historical Development of ICD Coding: The origins of ICD coding can be traced back to the 18th century when physicians began categorizing diseases. Over time, various classification systems were developed, leading to the establishment of the International List of Causes of Death, which eventually evolved into the modern ICD system under the management of the WHO.
